What is Knowledge, Really? Understanding How We Learn and Grow

I'm Adão Lima, a UI programmer, learning enthusiast, and a big fan of science fiction, technology, and programming. Today, I want to dive into a fascinating topic that we interact with every single day but rarely stop to analyze.
We use the word "knowledge" all the time. But have you ever paused to ask yourself: what is it, exactly? How is it formed? And how can we improve it? Let's break down the mechanics of knowing.
How is knowledge formed?
Knowledge isn't just magic; it's a specific mechanism that we use to get things done. Generally, it's built in two primary ways:
- Rational thought — this happens when we take two pieces of existing information that we've consumed and connect them to form something new. If that new connection can be validated in the real world and yields the same result every time it's applied, it becomes knowledge.
- Experience (trial and error) — the classic "learning by doing." You take an action, observe what goes right and what goes wrong, extract a pattern from that experience, and apply it the next time you try.
What is the purpose of knowledge?
Ultimately, knowledge helps us solve the challenges the world throws at us. It's essential for survival.
Interestingly, humans aren't the only ones who use knowledge — animals develop knowledge based on their experiences too. But humans have a superpower: we can record our rational thoughts. Through language, writing, and reading, we can absorb the life experiences of other people without having to go through the trial and error ourselves.
How do you measure and improve knowledge?
If you want to know whether a piece of knowledge is valuable, you have to measure its efficiency.
When you apply this knowledge, does it help you achieve your desired result using less time and energy? If your actions produce unexpected or wrong results, there's a flaw in the foundation of that knowledge.
To improve your knowledge, look at what you want to achieve. Often, the goal is to spend less energy to get the same — or a better — result. You can do this by analyzing different methods, or by diving into existing literature to stand on the shoulders of those who have already experimented and explored the topic.
The ultimate way to consolidate learning
There are two guaranteed ways to truly consolidate what you've learned: applying it, and teaching it to someone else.
So here's a challenge: try explaining what "knowledge" is in your own words, using your own examples. Teaching it back is the best way to prove you've mastered it.
